Mikey Punky Pineapple

Mikey the Punky Pineapple

Hi, my name is Mikey the Punky Pineapple.

I am based on a design by Harry at Irby Primary School, Wirral. Thank you very much Harry, I love your design!

I am Hard of Hearing (HoH) which just means I don't hear very well! When I want to listen to something, I have to concentrate and it's hard work! I rely a lot on lip reading which is relatively easy when someone is facing me, standing still, has the light on their face and talks slowly but that just doesn't happen in real life!!

Here's a little test for you: Look at your lips in the mirror and say the words 'bike', 'pike' and 'mike'. Do they all look the same to you? Yep, they do to me too!

What can you do to help?
  • If you are not sure, ask me which side my hearing aid is on. If you sit on that side, I'll be able to hear you better.
  • Try to stand so you are facing the light. If the light is behind you it might be difficult for me to read your lips, see your facial expressions and follow gestures.
  • Speak more slowly and don't have anything in your mouth.
  • Keep your hand away from your mouth when you are talking.
  • Try to stand in one place when you are speaking.
  • Turn down the backgound noise if you can e.g. music, television, radio
  • Be patient with me and be prepared for me to keep asking you to repeat something!
  • Don't whisper in my ear!
Makaton

Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life. Almost everything we do involves communication: everyday tasks such as learning at school, asking for food and drink, sorting out problems, making friends and having fun. They all rely on our ability to communicate with eachother.

Makaton is a way of communicating using signs and symbols.

When people use Makaton when they speak to me, it's great! It's like having extra clues to help me understand what they are saying.

Thank you so much for being interested!
